Canal House
2023 - 2025Status: Completed
Location: Amsterdam, NL
Client: Private
Program: Refurbishment & Restoration
Project Architect: Bas Vogelpoel
Design Team: Bas Vogelpoel, Alexander Petrounine
Photography: Bas Vogelpoel
During the renovation of this canal house we were faced with the challenge of transforming a poorly renovated student society's discotheque (and later a student housing complex) into a fully-fledged residence.
The highlight of the existing house was the reception hall, which featured, among other things, painted wallpaper and a fireplace with an ornately decorated mantelpiece. The fireplace is still there, but in 1968, the student society laid a floor right through it, dividing the stucco relief into two sections. By introducing a mezzanine, we have given the unique mantelpiece a new life, and the remarkable Louis XV stucco ceiling is once again visible.
On the mezzanine is a multifunctional space that can be used as both a bedroom and/or office. Here, you can fully appreciate the carefully restored, ornate stucco ceiling. A glass balustrade creates a beautiful connection with the fireplace.
The house has been given a calm yet warm palette. The starting point was the continuous oak floor. This creates a beautiful and soft connection between the existing and the new.
